The objective of the UPSC interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service. This includes an evaluation of their intellectual qualities, social traits, and interest in current affairs. Key qualities judged during the interview are:

  • Mental Alertness: Quick thinking and responsiveness to questions.
  • Critical Powers of Assimilation: Ability to process and analyze information.
  • Clear and Logical Exposition: Clarity and coherence in expressing ideas.
  • Balance of Judgment: Sound decision-making abilities.
  • Variety and Depth of Interest: Broad and deep knowledge across various domains.
  • Ability for Social Cohesion and Leadership: Skills in uniting and leading people.
  • Intellectual and Moral Integrity: Strong ethical principles and honesty.

The interview is conducted in a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, aimed at revealing the mental qualities of the candidate.
